Fake rugby jerseys impounded

Maybe it is simply a coincidence that thousands of fake rugby jerseys were found by customs a day or so after Sactwu said more needs to be done to tackle illegal imports.

Fake rugby jerseys seized

Johannesburg - Thousands of counterfeit rugby jerseys with an estimated street value of R43m have been seized in Johannesburg, the SA Revenue Service (Sars) said on Thursday.

Spokesperson Anton Fisher said 66 000 jerseys were found in a container in Cleveland by police and custom officials, earlier this week.

"The South African rugby jerseys were already tagged for a leading sports apparel outlet, and were priced at R599.95 per jersey," he said.

Fisher said the goods were falsely declared as mannequins. A man has been arrested and charged for making a false declaration.

He said with the Rugby World Cup coming up, Sars expected to see an increase in counterfeit goods like it happened in 2010, ahead of the Soccer World Cup.

they are marked with total sports bar codes and the hologram R599.00 but they are selling on the streets for R100.00-R150.00

All the fakes that the vendors sell have an original price tag of R599 on them, even a tag appealing people to buy original stuff. Absa offer the jersey at half the price if you open an account...absolute rip off considering the latest releases dont even have the correct branding on them.

A lot of these "fakes" are made in the same factories the original is made in. The factories make extra cash on the side. I know of a jeans company that was doing this when they openned/outsourced a factory in cape town. They sold some "fakes" but found that a lot of people rather paid for the real thing at the inflated price in a store. true story

I am interested to know what SARS does with these seized jerseys? does anyone have any idea?

Why are we worried - hasnt anyone noticed that now that they have relegated the Springbok to the sleeve, the Canterbury Clothing logo has taken center stage on the Jersey. Didn't those idiots at SARU notice that the Logo is made up of three C's which if you look at them are made up of the Kiwi, meaning that effectively the South African side run around with National Symbol of New Zealand on their jerseys instead of the Springbok. The All Blacks must be laughing their heads off!!

One should ask the question how do "fake" gmts get "real" price tickets on them.

SARS did their job & should be commended for it.

The question needs to be asked who is behind this importing and how are they linked to the retailer to get such detailed information to attach to the merchandise.

Far too many questions with fewer answers.

How much "fake" merchandise has slipped through the net after this bust? Only 1 container was busted - seems a bit of a trumped up PR exercise.
