Inside-Out: South African Fashion Designers Sewing Success
This is a new scholarly book that looks at the complexity of the South African fashion sector.
Inside-Out is the first comprehensive study of South African independent fashion designers and the role Fashion Weeks play in the promotion of the industry. The book provides a brief review of the historical development of South Africa's apparel industry up to and including the implementation of the quotas on Chinese apparel imports. The book reviews the linkages between designers, private boutiques, large retail-chain stores, suppliers, competition from cheap imports and within the industry and provides valuable recommendations for the industry. The author pre
sents a tableau of an industry that is fragmented by egos, poor government policies and a consumer base that only looks at price. In that being said, the author weaves and sews a picture of an industry that has an enormous potential.

Am so enjoying reading your very informative and relevant reports. I applaud you for both your perseverance and your chutzpah tackling these thorny issues and making them available to us all! Thank you for your efforts, it is so encouraging to see someone has the courage to be constructively critical! - well done! Karen
You doing great work and please stick at it! Its so hard sometimes sticking one's head out but the one thing I have learnt is that it does earn one respect at the end ........even if it means losing a few friends along the way - but then again where they ever friends to begin with..............?
Great on exposing Victoria's Secret and as for the Fashion Awards what can I say...........you hit it on the head - if they only realise just how much they go towards dampening the spirits of many a designer................. Take care, Gav

Interesting to see the South Africa industry shares many of the concerns we have in North America. Does your book discuss proposed solutions? I'm currently reading a review copy of Birnbaum's soon to be released book and he's pegging everything on what he calls the "mauritas (?) model". Sorry, the book is at home. I'm not sure I agree tho. I think the future is lean manufacturing.
